DRFX installers for DaVinci Resolve Macros

Updated December 2024

How to create DRFX installers for DaVinci Resolve Macros

All Motion Array’s Macro submissions must use the .drfx installer method, replacing the old installation method by copying and pasting the individual macros files (.settings) into DaVinci’s Program Files folders.

Before we show you how to create the installer, let’s review some of the essentials for Macros submissions in Motion Array:

1. Create your Macros inside DaVinci Resolve and export them as “.settings” files;

2. Put your macros files, as well as any assets used to create them, in a folder with your submission’s name;

3. Create image files that will serve as thumbnails for each macro. They must give an accurate representation of what the Macro contains and should be sized to 426px by 240px. The thumbnails should be accompanied by the Macros files inside the project folder and use the same correspondent file names.

Now that you’re all set, here’s a step-by-step for creating the .drfx file installer:

1. Create a folder named “Edit”;

2. Inside “Edit”, create another folder named after the category correspondent to your project, which should be “Effects”, “Generators”, “Titles” or “Transitions”;

3. Inside the category folder, paste your Macros project folder with all the .settings and image files;

4. Now, go back and compress the “Edit” folder into a ZIP folder.

5. Change the extension from “.zip” to “.drfx”, all in lowercase letters.

6. Name the DRFX file after your submission’s name.

7. In your submission’s main folder, along with the “Help” and “Fonts” folders, create a folder named “Macros” and put the DRFX installer inside of it.

Important to keep in mind!

1. When creating the category folder, always write it using plural and with the first letter in uppercase. Thus, it would be wrong to write “Transition” or “generators”; the correct form is “Transitions” and “Generators”;

2. There should always be a folder with the submission’s name after the categories folder, where the macros are placed. It keeps your project organized for users to access in the Effects panel inside DaVinci Resolve;

3. For Artists using PC, to change the file extension from “.zip” to “.drfx” you must enable the option “File name extensions” in Windows Explorer;

4. If your project features macros from multiple categories, you can create one single installer. Just create more than one category folder inside the “Edit” folder.
